Movie Camp Comes to Harmony This Summer

An exciting new opportunity is available to 7th grade through college age students this summer- the JEM Theatre will be hosting it’s first Movie Camp!

Burnsville, MN based movie producer and teacher Nicholas Ritz will be in Harmony from July 9th to 19th to provide classroom instruction and hands-on training to students who would like to learn how to make their own movies. Students will receive instruction on different aspects of making a movie including film making basics, sound recording, camera setting and shooting in natural light versus artificial light. The July 9th through 11th session will start with classroom time in the morning, then hands on time after lunch.

Students will then break into groups of five and shoot their movies July 12th-15th. They will be using a DSLR camera that will be checked out to an adult supervisor for the group. Each student group will then have an editing session between the days of July 16th-18th to get their films ready for the big screen.

On Thursday, July 19th the filmmaking students will then have a Red Carpet Movie Premier at the JEM to showcase their movies on the big screen. This will be a fun-filled black tie event complete with Oscar awards and a paparazzi area.

The cost to attend Movie Camp is $400 per student, however there is a fundraiser in place that will allow each student to earn his or her tuition fee. Students can sell $10 coupon books good for different items at the JEM- selling 67 coupon books will earn the student their full tuition. ($6 from each book goes towards tuition costs, $2 towards the costs of creating the coupons, and $2 goes towards the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation, an organization that provides assistance to premature infants.)

For students who are too young to attend camp but still want to be involved, they can become a movie camp actor! For only $50, younger students or kids who just want to act will receive a ticket to the premier, attendance at the four days of camp, and a t-shirt.

If you are interested in signing up for Movie Camp, contact Amber or Dana Coaty at 507-676-5456 or Registration ends on 25th, so don’t delay! Movie Camp will also be in need of adult supervisors and actors, so reach out if you’d like to help.
