Spring in Harmony, Minnesota: Things to Do in the Driftless Region

Spring has officially arrived in Harmony, and you can feel it in every corner of town. Fields are greening up, trees are budding, and warmer days mean more ways to get out and explore the Driftless Region.

Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a full weekend getaway, Harmony is the kind of place where you can slow down, look around, and actually enjoy the season.

Explore Amish Country

Just beyond town, you’ll find one of the largest Old Order Amish communities in the region—around 1,000 residents living and working throughout the countryside.

The best way to experience it? A guided visit with Amish Tours of Harmony. Van tours typically run at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. daily (no Sunday tours), or you can arrange for a guide to join you in your own vehicle.

Spring is also greenhouse season, and it’s worth the drive. Amish greenhouses are filled with vibrant flowers and a wide selection of vegetable starts—perfect if you’re ready to dig into your own garden. Along the way, you’ll also find farm shops offering handmade furniture, quilts, canned goods, local honey, maple syrup, and more.

Go Underground at Niagara Cave

Looking for something truly unique? Niagara Cave is now open daily for the season—and it’s unlike anything else in Minnesota.

Formed by the region’s distinctive karst topography, this cave system takes you deep below the surface on a guided tour featuring:

  • A breathtaking 60-foot underground waterfall
  • Ancient fossils set into the cave walls
  • Dramatic limestone formations
  • A historic underground wedding chapel

Tours run seven days a week, and reservations are recommended—especially as spring travel picks up.

Impressive limestone formations can be seen in Niagara Cave

Hit the Links

If you’re looking to slow things down a bit, Harmony Golf Club is now open for the season.

This 9-hole course is open to the public and offers a relaxed, scenic place to spend an afternoon. After your round, stick around to enjoy the clubhouse bar and patios—perfect for a drink and a few snacks in the spring sunshine.

👉 Be sure to check their website for current hours and details before you go.

It’s the kind of place where “local” actually means local—and you can taste the difference. Read about our member restaurants & distillery here.

Spring is prime time for biking, and Harmony is right in the middle of it all. The Root River State Trail and Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail offer more than 60 miles of paved trails through some of southeastern Minnesota’s most scenic landscapes.

A newly completed spur now connects Harmony directly to Niagara Cave and extends to the Iowa border—making it easy to turn your ride into a full-day adventure.

Step Into Little House History

Just 12 miles south of Harmony, the small town of Burr Oak offers a surprisingly big piece of American history at the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum & Park.

This is one of the few places you can walk in the actual footsteps of the Ingalls family. Laura lived here from 1876 to 1877 while her family helped manage the historic Masters Hotel—which still stands today and is part of the museum experience. Burr Oak is also the birthplace of her younger sister, Grace.

Visitors can tour the preserved hotel, explore the museum grounds, and learn more about this lesser-known chapter of the Little House story. It’s an easy and worthwhile addition to your Harmony itinerary.

Stay a Little Longer

If you decide to make a weekend of it, you’ve got options.

Country Lodge Inn offers convenient lodging just off Highway 52 and within easy reach of downtown. Prefer something more tucked away? There are plenty of local Airbnbs, along with seasonal campgrounds opening for the year—including Harvest Farm Campground just south of town. Read more about local lodging.

  • ID tags + microchip info: Make sure your dog’s collar has up-to-date contact info, and double-check their microchip is registered just in case they wander off.
  • Stay cool & hydrated: Always have water available, especially on warm days or while walking the trail. Many local businesses will offer a water bowl if you ask!

A Step Back in Time: Learning Adventures in Harmony, Minnesota

July 25, 2025 by Harmony Area Chamber

Nestled in the scenic bluff country of southeastern Minnesota, Harmony is more than just the “Biggest Little Town in Southern Minnesota”—it’s a gateway to authentic learning experiences that blend natural wonder, cultural heritage, and living history. Whether you’re a history buff, a curious traveler, or a family seeking enriching adventures, Harmony offers a variety of ways to explore, engage, and be inspired.

Here are four unforgettable stops that turn a trip to Harmony into a meaningful learning journey:

  1. Explore the Depths of the Earth: Niagara Cave Walking Tour

Beneath the rolling farmland lies one of the Midwest’s most remarkable natural attractions: Niagara Cave. This one-hour guided walking tour takes you over a mile underground into a cool, awe-inspiring limestone cavern. Along the way, you’ll encounter a 60-foot underground waterfall, delicate stalactites and stalagmites, ancient fossils, and even an underground wedding chapel. The tour is both fascinating and educational, teaching visitors about geology, earth science, and the power of water over millions of years.

Tip: Wear sturdy shoes—there are around 275 steps throughout the tour—and bring a jacket; the cave stays at 48°F year-round!

  1. Step into Another Way of Life: Amish Tours of Harmony

Harmony is home to Minnesota’s largest Old Order Amish community, and learning about their way of life offers a rare glimpse into a world where simplicity and tradition reign. Amish Tours of Harmony offers twice-daily van tours or private car tours, taking you through the countryside to visit Amish farms, workshops, and stores. You’ll learn firsthand about Amish beliefs, craftsmanship, and customs, and have the chance to purchase homemade quilts, baskets, furniture, and baked goods directly from local artisans.

Note: Tours run Monday through Saturday—Amish businesses are closed on Sundays.

  1. Discover Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Hidden Chapter: Burr Oak, Iowa

Just 15 minutes south of Harmony, in Burr Oak, Iowa, lies a lesser-known chapter of the beloved Little House story. The Laura Ingalls Wilder  Museum is located in the actual hotel the Wilder family managed in the late 1860s—a formative but often overlooked part of Laura’s childhood. This is also the birthplace of her youngest sister, Grace. Tours of the restored hotel and grounds provide a unique window into post-Civil War frontier life, and offer fans of the series a touching, personal connection to the real people behind the pages.

  1. Local History, Right in Town: Harmony Area Historical Society and Downtown Walking Tour

Start your in-town learning adventure at the Harmony Visitor Center, where the Harmony Area Historical Society’s exhibit tells the story of the town’s founding, development, and people. Displays include vintage photos, artifacts, and exhibits that trace the community’s evolution from prairie settlement to modern-day hub.

Afterwards, take a self-guided walking tour through downtown Harmony. Interpretive kiosks located at key sites highlight historical buildings and share the stories of those who lived and worked here over the decades. It’s a free, open-air museum experience that lets you connect past to present as you stroll along Main Street.

Plan Your Learning Getaway

Whether you’re exploring ancient caves, visiting Amish farms, or stepping into Laura Ingalls Wilder’s footsteps, Harmony offers a rich and rewarding escape for the curious traveler. It’s a place where every path leads to discovery—and every stop teaches you something new.
